The Grand’Place and Place des Héros
Among the largest in Europe, the Grand’Place and the Place des Héros line up baroque façades with carved gables, unique in France. You sit on a terrace to admire the perspectives, compare the details of the arcades and share a northern beer or a coffee. In the evening, warm lights turn the cobbles into an open-air drawing room, ideal for a first date.
To the top of the belfry
Towering over the Place des Héros, the Arras Belfry rises seventy-five metres and belongs to the UNESCO-listed belfries. Together you take the lift and then a narrow staircase to the walkway, taking in the city roofs, the flamboyant Town Hall and the cathedral. A climb that often leaves breath short and conversation on pause.
The boves and Saint-Vaast Abbey
Beneath the cobbles, the Arras boves form a fascinating network of galleries dug from the tenth century. The guided visit tells the story of the quarrymen and their wartime role as a shelter. Above ground, Saint-Vaast Abbey houses the Museum of Fine Arts and the library in monumental surroundings. On Lyad, Arras members share their favourite spots; it is up to you to pick someone to push the door with.
